Happon Ramen House

This is one of the restaurants wherein they 'specialize' in a specific dish but I prefer something else from the menu.

Happon Ramen House is a mom-and-pop shop based in (the ever bustling) Maginhawa street. They sell fairly cheap ramen (below PHP 200) but don't expect anything stellar-tasting (like Ippudo or first year Ramen Nagi). It's not bad for the price, but I prefer their sukiyaki don (beef bowl) only.

Sukiyaki don, PHP 168.
Their sukiyaki don usually comes with a raw egg (yolk), but I just ask them to remove it. However, I strongly recommend ordering their sukiyaki don as is (with the egg) because it gives an additional flavor and texture to the meal.

The beef strips are properly seasoned; it's just the right amount of sweet and salty. It's not the best gyudon in Manila but when you compare Happon to other Maginhawa restaurants, this is by far a decent choice.

Shiratama green tea ice cream, PHP 78.
One of my favorites is their green tea ice cream with mochi and kinako (roasted soybean flour). The green tea is a bit icy (i.e. not as creamy of a consistency as a gelato) but I surprisingly don't mind because the green tea taste is good. Just the right amount of grassiness that's not too bitter but not too mild either. At 78 pesos that's a great deal (and palate cleanser).

If you want to order a side dish, you can try out their karaage (no photo though). The skin is crispy and the meat is juicy.

Personally this place is like my comfort food haven although I think the taste is just 'ok'. I'm still a regular client though.

TFD's rating (in Maginhawa) - ♡♡♡♡ this is one of the better spots in the area.
